Nectar of the Gods...or is it ambrosia?
It's been hot - over 90 degrees for several days, and more like temperatures to follow in the next week. This morning the boys said they were tired of playing in the heat - I understand.
Today we decided to watch movies, and make snow cones for lunch. The snow cone machine was working fine - we just needed the syrup. We went to Target, picked out three flavors and were ready to head home. On our way to the cash register, several Hostess products were displayed next to some feminine hygiene items, flashlights, emery boards, potato chips, and Slim Jims - impulse buys we all frequently fall for. The two oldest boys asked if we could get Ho-Ho's and Twinkies. Sure I said. What the heck, it's summer.
We came home and made several snow cones of all flavors. That was lunch. For dessert - the Hostess products. I don't feed the kids like this on a regular basis. We generally eat healthy foods, and I bake goodies on occasion, but to have "store-bought" treats is a neat thing in our house. The middle boy says, "I've never had a Twinkie before." Oldest boy echoes, "Me either." I explained about deadly trans fats, preservatives, and excess sugar. How it's important to take care of our bodies, but it's fun to splurge once in a while...yada, yada, yada. I also prepared them that they might be a little disappointed. Often times, this kind of garbagey food pales in comparison to homemade baked goods.
Middle boy seemed to enjoy the Twinkie, but I could tell it really wasn't that great for him.
Toddler child just rolled it around the tray of his highchair. I really think he thought it was a stuffed animal.
Oldest boy took a bite of his Twinkie, chewed slowly, and very calmly said, "This. Is the best thing. I've ever. Had."
